ORGANIC FARMING
Farm Help wanted October-December 2024 on our small diversified organic farm.
Hidden Hill Organic Farm is a 150 acre diversified, regenerative farm located outside of Holland Centre ON. We operate a 1 / 3 acre intensively managed cut flower garden, grow 1 / 3 of an acre of certified organic garlic, raise 3000 pastured chickens, and custom graze 25 yearling beef cattle.
We also maintain on farm accomodations for short term guests.
We are looking for someone from October 1st to December 18th to help with a variety of regular farm tasks. Primary responsibilities will include :
- Moving 10, 200sqft’ portable ‘Cackellac’ chicken tractors by hand once or twice each day.
- Feeding and watering chickens, maintaining water lines and feeders
- Building portable single strand electric fence
- Moving cattle once or twice each day to fresh grass
- Moving and maintaining cattle water
- Evaluating animals for stress, illness and injury
- Catching animals for shipping
- Operating overhead irrigation
- Tractor operation
This is a highly diversified operation, and so other occasional responsibilities may include the following :
- Construction
- Harvesting / processing flowers
- Carrying out basic animal care
- Disposal / burial of deadstock if / when needed
- Pickup / delivery
This is a 40 hour / week position, with chores every other weekend. Pay is $20-$25 / hour depending on experience and references.
The ideal candidate is physically fit and has experience working with cattle, poultry, electric fencing, and operating a tractor but this is not necessary.
Lots of on-the-job training is provided. The most important characteristics are showing up on time, being willing to work hard, and good communication skills.
