Scholarship Benefits:

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council will provide an amount of $45,000 yearly for two years to qualified students.

Eligible Nationalities:

Canada only.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be considered for this scholarship, as of the deadline date of the year in which you apply, you must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada or a protected person under subsection of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada), as of the application deadline hold or expect to hold a doctorate in one of the fields of research that NSERC supports.

In addition to that you can submit a maximum of one scholarship (Master’s or Doctoral) or fellowship application per academic year to either NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC.

You shouldn’t have previously earned a postdoctoral fellowship from NSERC, CIHR, or SSHRC (including a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship).

You should have fulfilled all requirements for your doctoral degree within the previous two years of the application deadline.

Only if you match one or more of the following requirements will you be given an exception to the doctoral degree completion eligibility period:

  • If you have worked full-time in industry or government for at least six months after having received your doctorate (experience in an academic institution or its affiliated hospitals, research institutions, or other laboratories will not be considered), NSERC will extend your eligibility period up to three years.
  • If you got your PhD after completing a non-research focused clinical residency program, NSERC will extend your eligibility up to three years.
  • If you had your career considerably interrupted within two years of completing your PhD due to parental, medical, or family-related commitments, NSERC will extend your eligibility period up to three years.
  • If you become the primary caregiver following the birth or adoption of a child within two years of finishing your PhD, NSERC will extend your eligibility period up to six years.
