The latest release from Houston hip-hop duo Jiles & Vinyl Villain, Mookie Blaylock Album is a laidback, jazz-infused ride that oozes cool from start to finish. Named after NBA star Mookie Blaylock, whose smooth game they felt encapsulated their vibe, Jiles & Vinyl Villain craft an assured, mellow soundtrack perfect for cruising or chilling.
Over production that mashes up old-school samples with keys and saxophone riffs, Jiles and Vinyl Villain trade bars with effortless chemistry. Their flows are conversational and dexterous, packed with pop culture references from 90s sports and TV. Songs like “Sixer” and “Sky Hook” weave basketball motifs over nostalgic beats. On “Righteous Lip” they find perfect pocket to float on the beat.
While the album glides by smoothly, some more variety could take it to the next level. The production becomes a bit samey, although excellent, track after track. A few faster or more experimental beats could have showcased the duo’s versatility. Featured rappers like Bun B and Chamillionaire shine but appear too sparingly.
Overall though, Jiles & Vinyl Villain achieve exactly what they aimed for on Mookie Blaylock - an album exuding laidback confidence and flair. From the cover art to the beats, they nail the aesthetic and vibe. Fans of jazz rap like A Tribe Called Quest or Guru should find plenty to enjoy here. Mookie Blaylock may not be groundbreaking but it bumps.
